A Worle primary school has added to its growing culinary reputation, after a team of pupils made it to the final of a national baking competition.

Mendip Green Primary School featured in the Mercury earlier this year when its head chef, Steve Fowell, was named the South West’s school chef of the year after triumphing in a regional contest.

Now, it seems his expertise has been rubbing off on others in the school, after a three-strong pupil team enjoyed similar success.

The trio – Coral Roberts, Charlotte Jones and Aislinn Shipton – have won through to the final five of the McDougalls Young Baking Team of the Year competition.

The contest is organised by McDougalls Flour, and aims to help teach young people where food comes from and boost their cooking skills, after a recent British Nutrition Foundation survey revealed 20 per cent of children think fish fingers are made from chicken and 25 per cent believe cheese is a plant.

Rules also insisted that competitors had to make their dishes – one savoury, one sweet – using a local ingredient sourced within 30 miles of their school.

Coral, Charlotte and Aislinn impressed judges with a fruit-based dessert which they called Weston Super Summerfruit Croquembouche – choux pastry balls and fresh fruit bound together by threads of caramel.

Competition spokesman Sarah Robb said: “With our competition in its third year now, it is great to see new schools getting involved and we have been overwhelmed by the creativity of the recipe entries we received.

“Well done to the five finalists, including Mendip Green. The final is set to be an exciting day and I know the judges are looking forward to watching the delicious sweet and savoury dishes being produced and crowning the overall winner.”

The finalists will go head-to-head in front of a live audience at Birmingham’s Hilton on July 6.

Chef Steve said the girls are looking forward to their big day.

He said: “Being in the final is absolutely mind-blowing, we’re over the moon; even just getting to the final is great.

“The passion I see in the children when they are cooking is wonderful and we’re all really looking forward to the final.”
