It was about halfway through the Brass Band Blowout, and the Free Agents Brass Band was running late. But for those who waited, the band made a dramatic entrance, entering Howlin’ Wolf through the front door while playing and moving through the crowd until they got on stage. The experience was well worth it for those who were already at this benefit for the Dinerral Shavers Educational Fund on Jan. 21.
Not to say there weren’t other great performances that night: in addition to Free Agents, the lineup included DJ Ruby, Tawain Cherrelle, Deno Da Don, Big Chief John of the Red Cheyenne Mardi Gras Indians, Heartbeat Brass Band, TBC Brass Band, and Hot 8 Brass Band, of which the fund namesake, Dinerral Shavers, was a member until he was killed 10 years ago.
The fund was established in March 2007 in honor of Shavers, an educator, musician, entrepreneur and New Orleans Civil Sheriff. Since then, his sister Nakita Shavers has been spreading the word about the organization’s music and cultural education initiatives targeting the city’s youth, as well as promoting anti-violence initiatives.
