BlueBird Educational Foundation, a local nonprofit in Fort Pierce, supports students through scholarships and provides musical instruments to students in need.

The organization was founded in 2008 with the goal of deepening music appreciation and expanding cultural horizons.

T. Charles Shafer has been a board member since 2012.

During that time, he has been involved in numerous foundation events, including “Grooving on the Pointe,” “Recycling in the Key of E,” the foundation’s annual instrument donation drive; “Groovin’ & Tastin’” during Jazz Appreciation Month; and the Bluebird Events Concert Series.

Like many smaller nonprofits, BlueBird Educational Foundation is relatively unknown in St. Lucie County. It has been serving the community for almost 10 years, yet most people have not heard of the work it does.

“I think BlueBird does a tremendous job,” said Shafer. “I believe in the mission. Every child who aspires to play a musical instrument should have the opportunity, regardless of their financial situation. I’m proud BlueBird helps fill that gap.”

Shafer has been defending those accused of crimes since 1986. He is a graduate of the University of North Carolina Law School. He served as an assistant public defender, prior to opening his own practice in 1991.

He also serves on the board of directors for the ARC of St. Lucie County and has been active in Special Olympics and the Exchange Club.
